A Partnership to Bring Digital Remittances to Bankless Farmworkers

Ganaz Launches Remittance Service:

Envíos con Ganaz Powered by Remitly

Ganaz and Remitly have partnered to bring digital remittances to bankless agricultural workers

Seattle, WA — January 12, 2023 Ganaz, the people management platform for agriculture, announced today the launch of Envíos con Ganaz powered by Remitly.

In its continued efforts to help create safer, fairer, and more profitable workplaces while providing the financial services needed to help workers forge a path out of poverty, Ganaz is integrating a remittance service into its Ganaz MasterCard® Payroll Card. This new partnership enables bankless agricultural workers to finally move to a fully digital remittance experience.

In 2021, 94.9% of all remittances to Mexico originated from the United States. Many migrants sending money to Mexico are farmworkers. Remittances are critical to low-income families for expenses like food, clothing, medical needs, and paying off debts, and are also used to pay for higher education and acquire property. With Mexican migration to the United States continuing to rise, and the Mexican national economy still struggling to recover from a recession and COVID cases, money transfers are projected to grow by 13.7%, amounting to a total of around $58.6 billion dollars in 2022.

Bankless farmworkers traditionally send remittances after cashing their paycheck at local markets. These same markets often serve as over-the-counter remittance operators. Broadly speaking, fees have significantly dropped from an average of $30 USD in the 1990s to $10 USD today. That being said, ten dollars is still quite a bit when multiplied by numerous remittances a year and when related to the average take-home pay of an agricultural worker. Ganaz is replacing the out-of-date process and significantly reducing that fee for cardholders of the Ganaz Mastercard® Payroll Card.

In partnership with Remity, Ganaz has launched Envíos con Ganaz, a new feature of the Ganaz Mastercard Payroll Card, enabling cardholders to send remittances more quickly and at a lower cost than other options.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Ganaz. Our companies have a shared commitment to delivering trusted services and peace of mind in sending money home to loved ones,” said Ranjitha Kurra, VP & Head of Revenue at Remitly.

Ganaz customers have already benefited from deploying the Ganaz MasterCard® Payroll Card with remittances. NWFM, an apple and cherry grower in Washington, shares how having remittances as an integrated part of payroll cards helps its H-2A crew seamlessly send money home during harvest.

“Moving away from paper checks ensures the employee receives their money on payday without having to dedicate hours of work to it, and they’re able to send the money home within minutes of the deposit hitting their account, avoiding the long lines in town. Having this payroll card relieves stress from us both,” said Olivia Juarez, HR Manager at NWFM

Doing good, together.

Early Ganaz and Remitly investors are highlighting the importance of this new partnership.

Peter Van Oppen, a partner at Trilogy Equity Partners, an early investor for both Remitly and Ganaz,  says, “Remitly and Ganaz are terrific Trilogy companies bringing innovation to solve human needs. Best-in-class technology and shared values can combine to lower cost and simplify solutions for workers and growers.”

Other mutual investors like Chris DeVore, with Founders’ Co-op, expressed:

"We're thrilled to see these two mission-driven financial services companies working together to make life better for the workers who put food on our table every day.” Chris further added, “Making financial products cheaper, safer, and more transparent is a shared goal of both Remitly and Ganaz, and this new service is a huge win for growers and workers alike.”
